We lost a legend this week. Donald Byrd left us some great music and memories to cherish. There are so many Hip Hop artists inspired by Mr. Byrd's infectious sound. His influence can be heard in many of these artists songs which sampled his music. You should visit WhoSampled.com to see how many acts sampled Donald Byrd's music which included DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, A tribe called Quest and son many more. Along with being a jazz giant Mr. Byrd also has two masters degrees including a law degree. In 1973, he created The Blackbyrds, a fusion group consisting of his best students. They scored several major hits including "Happy Music" (No. 3 R&B, No. 19 pop), "Walking In Rhythm" (No. 4 R&B, No. 6 pop) and "Rock Creek Park". The late rapper Gang Starr collaborated with Donald Byrd on Guru's album Jazzmatazz Vol 1. We have lost a great musician, RIP Donald Byrd. Don't forget to check out his songs and get to know more about his music. I remember listening to this song when I lived in DC because Rock Creek Park is in the DC area, the radio stations played this song alot. Enjoy!!
